What is an expansion joint system?
Expansion joint systems are used to conceal the gaps in architectural structures created to accommodate natural structural movement. Structures such as parking ramps, airports, arenas, and hospitals have large building footprints, defined as the entire area covered by the structure.
Proper construction of these structures requires a collection of smaller sections rather than one large continuous section. Without the creation of these smaller sections, the structure would crack under its own weight in potentially undesirable locations.
By sectioning off the building during the construction process, builders have essentially pre-built manageable cracks. For aesthetics and safety purposes, expansion joint systems are used to cover the gaps in large architectural structures.
